"Michael Crean is a composer, theatre-maker, performer and multi-instrumentalist from London, working across theatre, film and his own artist projects.

His music moves between acoustic songwriting, electronics, jazz and contemporary composition, often bringing together live instruments, found sounds and electronic production. His debut solo album, Songs to the Sea, was described as “a contender for Album of the Year… captivatingly emotional and unlike anything I’ve heard before.” He writes, records and produces his own artist work, and performs as a pianist, violinist, accordionist, guitarist and singer.

 

As a composer and musical director, Michael has worked extensively across theatre and live performance. Recent credits include Gecko Theatre’s The Rescue and From Here On, Wildcard Theatre’s Evelyn, and Dream Awake's The Deal, a large-scale immersive theatre production created aboard a purpose-built ship in Shenzhen, China, for which he composed and musical-directed the production and performed as part of its live ensemble.

His music for film has been screened at the BFI, BAFTA and London Fashion Week, and his theatre work has been presented at venues and festivals including the Shaftesbury Theatre, VAULT Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His score for Arch Angel Ali received awards for Best Original Score at Mindfield Film Festival and the Impact DOCS Awards.

Alongside his own work, Michael has written, arranged and produced music for other artists and companies. KALA’s debut EP, which he co-wrote and produced, was selected among BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Top 5 EPs of the week, and his music has also been used by Milwaukee Ballet.

Michael trained in Composition and Jazz Piano at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and in Acting and Contemporary Theatre at East 15 Acting School. His work draws on this combination of music and theatre, with a particular interest in storytelling, multi-disciplinary live performance and the spaces between different musical forms."
